Hi there!

So, you have a complicated relationship with sex. Maybe this is because of anxiety, fertility struggles, relationship challenges, or past experiences with sex. Whatever the reason, you’re recognizing the need to explore exactly how everything connects. I’m so glad you’re here.

Through our work together, you’ll learn how your history and beliefs have shaped your views on sex and how to take control of your sexuality moving forward.

Your therapy journey should be just as unique as you are.

It’s important to me to spend time getting to know you and understanding how your experiences and relationships have made you the person that you are now. This helps me create an individualized plan to help you realize your vision for yourself and your relationships.

Jessica McDermott, Rochester Therapist

I bring a unique combination of perspectives to the therapy space.

I received my bachelor’s degree in health education with hopes of pursuing sex education. Upon further exploration of the world of sexuality professions, I discovered sex therapy. This path resonated with me so much, I went on to pursue a master’s degree in marriage and family therapy with a focus on sex therapy.

During my practicum work in graduate school, I met with individuals, couples, and families to help them better understand how they were simultaneously impacting and being impacted by the systems they were a part of. I was also able to bring in specific knowledge about how these systems impacted them at the sexual level.

It remains important to me to continue my education through trainings and workshops so that I can bring an even wider selection of tools to those I work with.

When I’m not wearing my professional hat, I’m spending time exploring any and all creative pursuits, playing board games with my husband, or lounging around with our dog, Athena.

My Approach to Therapy

Systems-oriented: Each of us is a part of multiple systems (families, communities, society, etc.) and are, ourselves, a complex system needing care at multiple levels (physical, mental, sexual, etc.) All these systems are constantly influencing and being influenced by one another. My work is rooted in building an understanding of your unique systems, how they influence each other, and how you can use this information to make meaningful change.

Compassion-based: All too often, we are our own worst critic. Investing in these overly critical narratives about ourselves limits us in all areas – including sex. Leaning on principles of self-compassion helps you build a gentler relationships with yourself and, by extension, those around you.

Collaborative: I don’t view myself as the expert in the room. I have information and tools that will be helpful for you, but you are the expert on you. Together, we’ll identify what’s important to you, what the barriers have been in getting there, and how you’ll move forward differently.
